How Do I Choose the Right Monitor?

How Do I Choose the Right Monitor?

Choose a monitor by matching three things to your work: size and resolution for screen space, refresh rate for gaming smoothness, and panel type for colour quality. For most office users a 24-inch Full HD IPS monitor is the value sweet spot; gamers should prioritise refresh rate and designers should prioritise colour accuracy.

What size and resolution should I get?

For everyday work, 24 inches at Full HD (1920×1080) is sharp, affordable, and easy to drive with any computer. At 27 inches and above, a higher resolution (QHD or 4K) keeps text crisp — Full HD stretched across a large panel looks soft up close.

More resolution also means your graphics hardware works harder, which matters for gaming: a mid-range GPU that performs beautifully at Full HD may struggle at 4K.

Does refresh rate matter if I do not game?

Refresh rate is how many times per second the screen updates. The 60 Hz standard is fine for documents and video; 120 Hz and above makes motion visibly smoother, which gamers notice immediately in fast titles.

Even outside gaming, a higher refresh rate makes scrolling and window movement feel more fluid — pleasant, but not worth paying much extra for unless you play.

What do panel types (IPS, VA, TN) mean?

IPS panels offer the best colour and viewing angles, making them the default recommendation for office work, design, and shared screens. VA panels offer deeper contrast — good for movies and dark-room use — while TN panels trade image quality for speed and price.

For colour-critical work like photo editing and design, look for IPS monitors with high colour-space coverage; for everything else, a standard IPS is more than enough.

What else should I check before buying?

Make sure the monitor’s inputs match your computer’s outputs (HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C), and consider a height-adjustable stand or VESA mounting if you work long hours — neck comfort outlasts any spec.

RL TECHZONE stocks monitors for office, gaming, and design budgets, with island-wide delivery. Tell us your computer’s spec and use case, and we will point you at a monitor it can actually drive well.
