What Do I Need to Build a Custom Gaming PC?
A custom gaming PC needs seven core parts: a processor (CPU), graphics card (GPU), motherboard, RAM, storage (SSD), power supply, and a case with good airflow — plus a monitor that matches the performance you are paying for. The GPU deserves the largest share of a gaming budget, followed by the CPU.
Which component matters most for gaming?
The graphics card. In most games it determines your frame rate more than any other part, which is why experienced builders allocate the biggest single share of the budget to the GPU and then build a balanced system around it.
A common mistake is pairing an expensive CPU with a weak GPU "to upgrade later" — for gaming specifically, you will get more enjoyment doing it the other way around.
How do I make sure the parts are compatible?
The motherboard is the compatibility hub: it must match the CPU socket, support your RAM type and speed, and have the slots you need. The power supply must deliver enough wattage for the GPU with headroom, and the case must physically fit the card and move enough air to keep everything cool.
Compatibility checking is exactly what our Build a PC tool and our in-store technicians are for — tell us the games you play and your budget, and we will spec a balanced, compatible build rather than a collection of parts.
How much RAM and storage does a gaming PC need?
16 GB of RAM is the comfortable standard for gaming today; 32 GB helps if you stream, edit videos, or keep many applications open while playing. For storage, an NVMe SSD as the main drive makes the whole system feel fast — games load dramatically quicker than from a hard disk.
A practical setup is one SSD for the operating system and your favourite games, with a larger hard disk added later if you need bulk storage for recordings and files.
Should I build it myself or have it built?
Building yourself is a rewarding learning experience, but a professional build comes with cable management, proper thermal paste application, stress testing, and — importantly — one place to bring the machine if anything misbehaves.
RL TECHZONE builds custom PCs for gaming, office work, design, and editing, with every build tested before handover and warranty on the components. Start with our online PC builder or visit a branch to plan your build.
