SSD vs HDD: Which Storage Should I Choose?

SSD vs HDD: Which Storage Should I Choose?

Choose an SSD for your operating system and programs in every case — it is the single biggest speed upgrade a computer can have. A hard disk (HDD) only still makes sense as cheap secondary storage for large files like videos and backups.

Why is an SSD so much faster?

A hard disk stores data on spinning magnetic platters and physically moves a read head to find it; an SSD stores data in flash memory chips with no moving parts. That difference makes an SSD many times faster at the small, scattered reads an operating system does constantly.

In practice: a computer that takes over a minute to boot from a hard disk typically boots in well under twenty seconds from an SSD, and programs open almost instantly. It is the upgrade customers notice most.

Is an HDD ever the right choice?

Yes — for bulk storage. Per gigabyte, hard disks remain much cheaper, so they are still sensible for storing large video libraries, photo archives, CCTV recordings, and backups where capacity matters more than speed.

The combination that works for most desktop users is an SSD as the main drive for Windows and applications, plus an HDD as a second drive for files.

What is the difference between SATA and NVMe SSDs?

SATA SSDs use the same connector as hard disks and are limited by that older interface; NVMe SSDs plug directly into the motherboard and are several times faster again. For everyday use both feel quick, but for large file transfers, video editing, and modern game loading, NVMe is worth having.

Most laptops and motherboards from the last several years accept NVMe drives. If you are not sure what your machine supports, bring it to any RL TECHZONE branch and we will check and quote an upgrade.

Can I upgrade my existing computer to an SSD?

Almost always, yes — and it is the most cost-effective way to make an older laptop or desktop feel new again. Our technicians can clone your existing Windows installation and files to the new drive, so the machine comes back faster but otherwise exactly as you left it.

SSD upgrades are available at all three of our branches, usually as a same-day service depending on stock and queue.
