How Much RAM Do I Really Need?

How Much RAM Do I Really Need?

8 GB of RAM is the minimum for comfortable everyday use, 16 GB is the sweet spot for office multitasking and gaming, and 32 GB or more pays off for video editing, design, and heavy professional workloads. More RAM than your work uses adds nothing — but too little slows everything down.

What does RAM actually do?

RAM is your computer’s working space — everything currently open lives there. When RAM runs out, the system starts using the storage drive as overflow, which is dramatically slower and is the classic cause of a computer that freezes when you open "one tab too many".

That is why the symptom of too little RAM is not slowness all the time, but slowness when multitasking: many browser tabs, a video call, and a spreadsheet open together.

How much RAM for study and office work?

8 GB handles documents, browsing, email, and video calls acceptably, and is a sensible floor for a budget laptop. 16 GB is the comfortable choice — modern browsers alone can use several gigabytes, and 16 GB keeps the machine responsive even with everything open at once.

If you are choosing between a better CPU with 8 GB or a modest CPU with 16 GB for office work, the extra RAM usually wins.

How much RAM for gaming and creative work?

For gaming, 16 GB is the standard; very few games benefit from more. Streaming or recording while gaming pushes that toward 32 GB.

Video editing, large Photoshop files, 3D work, and running virtual machines genuinely use 32 GB or more — these are the workloads where extra RAM directly saves working time.

Can I add RAM to my current computer?

Most desktops and many laptops have free slots or replaceable modules, making a RAM upgrade one of the cheapest meaningful improvements available. Some thin modern laptops have memory soldered to the board, so check before buying if future upgrades matter to you.

Bring your machine to any RL TECHZONE branch and we will check what it supports and fit compatible memory while you wait, or browse RAM in our components section online.
