
How Do I Set Up a Home Wi-Fi Network That Actually Works?
A reliable home Wi-Fi network starts with placing the router centrally and off the floor, using the 5GHz band for nearby devices and 2.4GHz for range, updating the router firmware, and adding a mesh system if your home has dead zones. Most "slow internet" complaints are actually weak Wi-Fi coverage, not a slow connection from your provider.
Why does Wi-Fi feel slow even with a fast internet plan?
Your internet plan speed is only the connection between your router and your provider - it says nothing about how well Wi-Fi signal reaches each room. Walls, distance, floor level, and interference from other electronics all weaken the signal, and a fast plan cannot fix a router placed in a bad location.
This is why two homes with identical internet plans can have very different real-world speeds - the difference is almost always router placement and equipment, not the plan itself.
Where should I actually place the router?
Central to the home, elevated (on a shelf, not the floor), and away from thick walls, metal objects, and other electronics like microwaves and cordless phones that share similar frequencies. A router in a corner cabinet or behind a TV is one of the most common causes of weak signal in the rest of the house.
If the router must stay near the entry point where your provider's cable comes in, consider a mesh system or a wired access point elsewhere in the home rather than fighting the signal from a single, poorly placed router.
Should I use 2.4GHz or 5GHz?
5GHz is faster but has shorter range and struggles more with walls; 2.4GHz is slower but travels further and penetrates walls better. Most modern routers broadcast both automatically - connect devices in the same room as the router to 5GHz for speed, and devices further away to 2.4GHz for a more reliable connection.
If every device shows the same network name, most routers handle this switching automatically; if you have separate network names for each band, manually choosing the right one for each device and location gives more consistent results.
When is it worth upgrading to a mesh system?
If your home has multiple floors, thick walls, or rooms where Wi-Fi drops out or crawls, a mesh Wi-Fi system (multiple linked units placed around the home) solves dead zones far more effectively than a single stronger router. Mesh systems also make moving between rooms seamless, without devices getting stuck on a weak, distant signal.
