How to Set Up a Brand New Laptop the Right Way
Set up a new laptop properly by completing Windows Update first, removing bloatware, configuring backups and cloud sync, installing a password manager, enabling BitLocker or device encryption, and adjusting power settings. Spending one hour on setup saves many hours of fixing problems later.
What should I do first when I get a new laptop?
Before anything else, run Windows Update fully — go to Settings → Windows Update, install all updates, restart, and repeat until nothing is left. Out-of-box Windows installations are often months behind on security and quality updates, and running a new machine unpatched is an unnecessary risk.
Set up a Microsoft account during this process if you haven't already — it enables OneDrive backup, BitLocker device encryption recovery, and easy reinstallation of your software if anything goes wrong.
How do I remove the pre-installed software I do not need?
Most laptops come with trial antivirus software (McAfee, Norton), unnecessary OEM utilities, and promotional apps. Go to Settings → Apps, sort by publisher, and uninstall anything from the laptop manufacturer (beyond drivers) and any trial software you do not plan to pay for.
Windows Defender, included with Windows, is a capable antivirus for most users — you do not need to pay for third-party antivirus unless your situation requires specific features. Removing trial antivirus also eliminates a common source of slowness.
How do I make sure my files are safe from day one?
Set up OneDrive, Google Drive, or your preferred cloud storage and move your Documents, Desktop, and Pictures folders inside it. With this in place, anything you save is automatically backed up off-device. Enable device encryption in Settings → Privacy & Security → Device Encryption, which protects your data if the laptop is lost or stolen.
Create a system restore point (search "Create a restore point" in Start) so that if software problems develop in the first weeks, you have a clean baseline to return to.
What settings should I adjust for daily comfort?
Set the power plan to Balanced for a laptop you carry around (longer battery) or High Performance if it stays on a desk. Adjust display scaling and night light settings in Display settings for comfortable long-use. Set Windows to require a password on wake from sleep for basic security.
If you use multiple accounts on the same machine, set each one up at this stage rather than later — it is much cleaner to do at the start. For anything hardware-related — a warranty setup query or an accessory you need — RL TECHZONE branches are available for walk-in help.
